This image is a perfect example of being in the right place at the right time

and being prepared. I set up to photograph the clouds and the reeds

reflected in the lake just as the sun broke the horizon to my right. At that

moment, a bank of fog moved into the scene hiding the far shoreline. The

combination of the fog and the reeds in the morning light gave the scene

an ethereal quality that I have never witnessed again.

This is the scene that greeted me one October morning outside my tent at

Kingston Lake near the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. After a clear

and cold night, a mist from the relatively warm lake rose into the perfectly calm

air. The crescent moon hung high in the eastern sky as the colors of dawn spread

out on the horizon. This was one of the most serene moments in nature that I have

ever experienced.

Near Twelve Mile Beach in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore lies one

of the most picturesque white birch forests in Michigan. An especially nice time

to view (and photograph) the forest is in autumn when the birch leaves begin to

turn gold. Sugar maple and white pine, interspersed among the birches, lend

red and green highlights to the white trunks and golden leaves.

The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore lies along the south shore of Lake

Superior near Munising, Michigan. The "rocks" are limestone cliffs, several

hundred feet high in places that have been colored by minerals in the ground-

water. In the morning and evening light, the rocks take on a breathtaking warm

glow. Lake Superior, the largest and wildest of the Great Lakes, adds its own

element of primal beauty to the lakeshore.

Eastern Passage is a small fishing village outside Halifax, Nova Scotia. These

colorful lobster boats caught my eye one evening while I was wandering along the

docks. The light and conditions weren’t very good that evening or the next, but

on the third try they were perfect. Fortunately, the owners docked the boats in the

same spot each night.

  WP006 North Shore Driftwood
  Lake Superior is the largest and wildest of the Great Lakes. Nowhere is the

  character of the lake more evident than along it's northern shore. The

  relentless pounding of the waves and it's legendary storms have worn it's

  granite shores smooth and reduced boulders to cobble, and cobble to pebbles.

  Harbor in Lake Superior Provincial Park in Ontario.

This is a scene that I have photographed numerous times. On this occasion, the

wind was calm and the fog was of just the right consistency, not so thick as to limit

visibility, yet heavy enough to give the scene a mysterious feeling. The graceful

curve of the road contrasting with the rigid vertical tree trunks give this scene an

interesting graphic design element.

In recent years, many people have come to realize the beauty and ecological

importance of native grasslands. Groups as diverse as Pheasants Forever, local

high schools and even the Michigan Department of Natural Resources have begun

to replant native grasses and wildflowers on tracts of public and private land. Not

only has this been a boon to wildlife, but it has also provided a great place for

people to observe and photograph an ecosystem which once covered a large

portion of North America. In this photograph, I tried to capture the color and

softness of a meadow on a foggy summer morning.

  WP009 Elwa River
  The Olympic Peninsula in Washington State is one of the most ruggedly

  beautiful places in North America. Ancient conifers tower over rushing

  rivers and every bend in the road or trail reveals a new breathtaking vista.

  This photograph of a plant covered, mid-stream boulder was taken along the

  Elwa River as it makes it's hurried decent into Puget Sound.

One sure sign that spring is in full swing is the flowering of the redbud trees.

I found this young tree in full blossom at the Bernhiem Forest Botanical Garden in

Kentucky. The bright colors of the flowers and the dark outline of the trunk made

the redbud stand out against the pale green leaves of the trees in the background.

Killarney Lake is located in Killarney Provincial Park in Ontario, often called the

jewel of Ontario’s parks. The most striking feature of the park are the LaCloche

Mountains, a well-weathered mountain range made of white quartzite rock. In

mid-September, the birches and maples begin their autumn color changes,

creating a striking contrast of color against the white granite.

If you live near a large body of water in the Midwest, it is not uncommon to witness

the simultaneous emergence of hundreds of thousands of mayflies. I was fortunate

enough to witness one such event one June morning, when the insects literally

covered the ground and vegetation. These mayflies had found a roost on the frond

of a shield fern.

This row of trees is located on a small sand point on Big Portage Lake in Jackson

County, Michigan. When the trees are viewed from a fishing dock that extends out

into the lake, you can really get a sense of the predominant wind direction in the

area. On this late winter morning, a hazy blue fog lay over the lake, providing a soft

backdrop for the leafless trees.

One of the most breathtaking areas in the Ontario is the Lake Superior Provincial

Park region near Wawa. It is an area of rugged Lake Superior shoreline, deep

confer and maple forests, rushing rivers and quiet, pristine lakes. Rabbit Blanket

Lake is one such lake. This photograph was taken one cold morning in

mid-September, when the mist was rising off the water of the lake and the rising sun

illuminated the clouds with a pale, red glow. I managed to get off about three shots

of the scene before the clouds turned from red to yellow and the magic was gone.

Goatsbeard is a common and somewhat nondescript wildflower found throughout

the Midwest. It becomes quite striking, however, when the plant goes to seed in

midsummer. The seed head looks a bit like a golden brown dandelion, only much

larger. This photograph of the seed head was taken with a close-up lens with

backlighting provided by a hazy summer sunset.

Autumn in the north country is an exceptionally beautiful season, especially in a

forest of maple trees. With colors ranging from bright yellow to deep red, often on

the same tree, the maple is the essence of autumn color. I make a point to

photograph this maple each year because of it’s colorful foliage and it’s strong

and graceful limbs. This photograph was taken in a very light rain without any

color-enhancing filter. One of my best selling images, this photograph has been

published by several magazines, including a use as a cover shot.

Early one morning, on Kingston Lake in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore,

I spotted this canoeist paddling solo through the rising mist. Whether he was fishing

or just enjoying the quite and solitude of the lake, I never found out. The rising sun

reflecting off his canoe and the mist rising off the calm water made this an image I

will never forget.

One North American bird that has benefited greatly from the helping hand of

concerned people is the Eastern Bluebird. Once quite rare due to loss of suitable

breeding space, the bluebird has made a remarkable comeback thanks in large

 part to the popularity of installing bluebird houses. This male lives year-round on

our property and he and his mate usually produce two broods of young each year.

I have photographed this boardwalk extending out into Big Portage Lake during all

seasons of the year. This composition, with the misty fog and warm, morning

sunlight, is by far my favorite. The morning sun was at such an angle as to make

each railing appear to be individually lit and the misty background lends a feeling of

 mystery or the infinite to the scene.

This photograph was taken deep in the back country of Killarney Provincial Park in

Ontario. We had canoed for several days in rainy, foggy conditions when the

weather finally broke and produced a starry night followed by a picture perfect

morning. I had scouted out this shot the night before and was up well before sunrise

to set up the camera. When the sun broke the horizon and lit up the granite and the

fog on the lake, I knew my efforts had paid off.

One morning in late August, I was photographing a blue heron along the shoreline

of Kent Lake near Milford Michigan. As I knelt to focus on the bird, I happened to

glance out over the water. When I saw this scene in front of me, I completely forgot

about the heron and scrambled to change lenses and capture the scene before it

changed. This peaceful composition remains one of my favorite photographic

images.

WP022 Fresh Snowfall

A brilliant, cold morning followed a springtime snowstorm that had dropped nearly

a foot of snow overnight.  As I drove along the trans-Canada highway, it seemed

every spot that looked promising for a photograph was far out of reach due to the

snow pilled up alongside the road.  Finally, I crossed my fingers and drove into an un-plowed parking area and rushed to capture this beautiful scene before the soft morning light disappeared.

WP023 Sunflowers

Nothing quite says "summer" like a field of sunflowers.  These large, colorful flowers

are not only beautiful, they also provide food for both people and animals.  This field

was planted in the Waterloo Recreation Area as part of a wildlife habitat enhance- ment project.  It also improved things for a photographer or two.

WP024 Summer Sunset - Limited Edition of 150

This photo was taken one summer evening when the yellow pond lilies were in bloom.  After wadding out from the shore, I found myself in the awkward position of slowly sinking into the muck as I waited for the sun to reach the horizon.  It took a bit of effort and time to extract my waders from the mud and make the short trip back

to shore.

One of the many waterfalls in the Munising, Michigan area is Alger Falls.

Situated right off highway 28 just outside of town, this scenic little cascade

comes alive in the autumn when the surrounding maples lose their leaves.

Those leaves not swept away in the current, decorate the surrounding dark  stone

in a riot of color.

The wild iris, or blue flag, is a common native wetland wildflower.  In late May and

June,  they can be found blooming amongst the grasses and sedge beside ponds and lakes throughout Eastern North America.  The bright blue and yellow flower
