If you live near a large body of water in the Midwest, it is not uncommon to witness the simultaneous emergence of hundreds of thousands of mayflies. I was fortunate enough to witness one such event one June morning, when the insects literally covered the ground and vegetation. These mayflies had found a roost on the frond of a shield fern.
